For most home golf simulators, plan around 2.7 m (9 ft) of clear ceiling height, roughly 3.0–3.7 m (10–12 ft) of usable width and 4.6–5.5 m (15–18 ft) of depth. These are planning ranges, not universal minimums: the golfer’s height and swing, handedness, screen clearance and the launch-monitor technology can all increase the space required.

There is no single minimum room size. Your swing, the people using the simulator and — crucially — the launch-monitor technology determine whether a room will work.

Nine feet is around the lower end of practical simulator territory for many golfers; 10 ft gives more freedom. Your own driver swing is the final test.
Some single-handed installations work from around 10 ft. Dual-handed play can need more — Garmin recommends 13 ft+ for a dual-handed Approach R50 setup.
This is where technology matters most. Side- or ceiling-mounted systems can need far less tracking space than rear-mounted radar systems.
These examples show why a single “minimum simulator room size” can be misleading. Always confirm the latest manufacturer guidance for the exact product and your swing.

Stand where the hitting mat will sit and make several slow, controlled swings with your longest club. Check the backswing and follow-through. A ceiling can be technically high enough while still making you subconsciously shorten your swing.
Garage-door tracks, motors, beams, lights and the thickness of the hitting mat can all reduce the clearance that matters. Ten feet is comfortable for many golfers, but taller players or upright swings may need more.
A right-handed-only or left-handed-only setup can sometimes move the hitting position off centre and make a narrower room workable.
If both will use the simulator, plan for a more central hitting position and two safe swing arcs. This can materially increase the width you need.
This is the key buying lesson: different tracking technologies use the room differently.
Systems that observe the strike from beside or above the ball do not need a long tracking run behind the player. That can make them much easier to accommodate in a compact room.
Rear-mounted systems need space between the sensor and tee as well as ball flight toward the screen or net. Add those distances before deciding that a garage is deep enough.
Measure the room as it will actually be used, not the dimensions on the building plan.
Check door tracks, openers, beams, lighting and any future ceiling-mounted projector or launch monitor.
Allow for shelving, storage, side-wall protection and both backswing and follow-through.
Allow for the enclosure or impact screen, safe screen clearance, the hitting position and any required sensor-to-ball distance.
Work through these five checks before shortlisting equipment.

Do not treat the minimums as a shopping specification. Make a full-speed swing with the tallest intended user, confirm left- and right-handed clearance, then apply the manufacturer’s placement instructions.
