Evidence labels: “Manufacturer-published” means the underlying requirement is stated by the maker in a product page, manual or support document. “GGL derived planning view” means Golf Gear Lab interprets those published requirements for practical room planning. It is not presented as a direct physical measurement by GGL.
Fast answers for common room questions
Which type works best when rear depth is limited?
Side-mounted camera systems such as the Garmin R50, Square Golf Home and Uneekor EYE MINI do not require the 6–9 ft sensor-to-tee run behind the ball that rear-mounted radar units use. That can be decisive in a short UK garage. The room still needs enough depth for the golfer and safe impact-screen clearance.
Which systems need the most depth?
Rear-mounted radar is usually the demanding geometry. Garmin R10, Rapsodo MLM2PRO and FlightScope Mevo+ all need meaningful space behind the ball as well as ball flight in front. Mevo+ requirements also vary by full-swing versus limited-flight use, so plan around the mode you will actually use.
What about left- and right-handed golfers?
A floor camera unit normally has to change sides when handedness changes. If several left- and right-handed golfers will share the simulator frequently, a wider room and an overhead system can be more convenient. Garmin specifically recommends 13 ft+ width for a dual-handed R50 setup.
Is a 9-foot ceiling enough?
It can be, but ceiling height is a golfer-and-swing question as much as a launch-monitor specification. Garmin recommends 9 ft+ for most R50 users; Golf Gear Lab recommends testing the tallest player's full driver swing at the proposed hitting position before buying an enclosure or monitor.
Manufacturer specification vs GGL recommendation
We deliberately keep these separate. A manufacturer's number describes what its equipment needs to operate. Golf Gear Lab's planning view adds the practical room questions the specification cannot answer for you: golfer height, driver swing, handedness, enclosure depth, bounce-back clearance, lighting and whether the room feels comfortable enough to swing normally.
Methodology and update policy
Golf Gear Lab checks primary manufacturer support pages, manuals and product documentation. We record the manufacturer's wording or dimensions, then add a separately labelled planning interpretation. We do not convert retailer claims into manufacturer specifications. Where guidance changes by mode, we preserve that distinction rather than collapsing it into one misleading number.
