Golf Gear Lab reference database · UK
Launch monitor subscriptions & 3-year ownership costs
Golf Gear Lab direct answer
Do golf launch monitors need a subscription?
No — not all of them. Some launch monitors retain useful core practice features without a mandatory subscription, while others charge for advanced data, cloud features, simulator courses or software. Compare the three-year ownership cost, not just the hardware price.
A launch monitor's cheapest purchase price is not always its cheapest ownership route. This reference separates hardware, free core use, manufacturer memberships, course credits and third-party simulator software so UK buyers can see what is genuinely recurring.
Quick answers
Which launch monitor has no monthly subscription? Square Golf Home has no monthly subscription for its own platform. Core range, club and ball data are available out of the box; virtual-course play uses credits after the included 1,000 welcome credits.
Does Rapsodo MLM2PRO work without Premium? Yes. Rapsodo says basic features remain available without Premium. Premium is needed for advanced features including club data, full-course access and third-party simulator compatibility.
Does Garmin R10 need a subscription? Not for basic launch-monitor use, but Garmin says a Garmin Golf subscription is required for Home Tee Hero's 43,000+ virtual courses.
What is the fairest way to compare cost? Decide which features you actually need, then compare the cost of that feature set over three years. Do not count an optional membership as mandatory, and keep third-party software separate.
UK ownership-cost reference
| System | Works without paid membership? | Free / included use | Paid route | 3-year platform cost* | What the paid route adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Square Golf Home | Yes | Range, club & ball data, practice modes + 1,000 welcome course credits | No monthly subscription. Optional course-credit top-ups: £2.99/100 to £19.99/1,000 | £0 required | Extra virtual-course holes after included credits are used |
| Rapsodo MLM2PRO | Yes | Basic features remain available; 45-day Premium trial with a new device | Premium: £165.99/year, £269.99/2 years or £499.99 lifetime shown on current UK product page | £497.97 using 3 annual renewals; lifetime £499.99 | Advanced metrics, club data, 30,000+ courses, cloud features and third-party compatibility |
| Garmin Approach R10 | Yes, for basic use | Core launch-monitor/app functions | Garmin Golf membership for Home Tee Hero | See current retailer | Home Tee Hero virtual play on 43,000+ courses and weekly virtual competition |
| SKYTRAK | Plan-dependent | Do not assume course play is included with hardware | Official UK-facing membership page currently lists Essential, Core and Elite tiers, but displays US-dollar pricing | Not converted | Practice libraries and, on higher tiers, bundled course-play libraries |
*Platform cost excludes hardware, optional course-credit usage and third-party software such as GSPro or E6. MLM2PRO annual example is 3 × £165.99 = £497.97. The 45-day trial is not deducted because its timing relative to renewals can vary. SKYTRAK is deliberately not converted from dollars: use the price shown in your account/checkout for a current UK purchase.
Why “subscription required: yes/no” is misleading
There are at least four different charging models: a device can work fully without a membership; work basically without one but reserve premium data or simulation for subscribers; use pay-as-you-play credits; or bundle different course libraries into different membership tiers. Golf Gear Lab therefore records what stops working when you stop paying, not just whether a subscription exists.
Manufacturer evidence
- Square Golf UK pricing — no monthly subscription, included credits and top-up pricing.
- Rapsodo UK Premium membership — trial and Premium feature set; confirms MLM2PRO can be used without Premium.
- Rapsodo UK MLM2PRO product page — current UK hardware and membership figures. Note: the same official page contains an older FAQ figure of £475 for lifetime access while its current product summary states £499.99; GGL uses £499.99 in the table and flags the discrepancy.
- Garmin R10 Home Tee Hero manual — Garmin Golf subscription requirement and 43,000+ courses.
- SKYTRAK membership — current tier structure. The UK-facing page was displaying US-dollar prices when checked.
How Golf Gear Lab calculates 3-year cost
We use the manufacturer's current stated price and the cheapest straightforward route that provides the feature being compared. We do not silently treat optional software as compulsory, convert foreign prices into supposedly exact UK costs, or mix temporary hardware promotions into recurring software totals. Third-party simulator subscriptions are shown separately because they can be used with more than one launch monitor and change independently.
Choose by what you actually want to do
Practice and data: prioritise useful core features that remain available without an annual fee. Home simulation: compare course access, third-party compatibility and PC/software costs as a package. Occasional virtual golf: a credit model can be cheaper than paying every year. Heavy long-term use: compare multi-year or lifetime options where offered.
