SkyTrak ST MAX: first look
SkyTrak’s current launch monitor and the replacement for the SkyTrak+. This page sets out the verified specification, space needs and costs while our full independent review is pending.

What it is
The ST MAX is SkyTrak’s current launch monitor and the successor to the SkyTrak+, which SkyTrak no longer lists as a current model. SkyTrak describes the tracking as dual Doppler radar plus photometric cameras. The unit sits to the side of the ball rather than behind it, which is why SkyTrak units suit rooms without much depth.
Independent coverage reports that the ST MAX uses the same tracking system and the same data set as the SkyTrak+. The differences are a speed-training module (SkyTrak credits GOLFTEC), dual USB ports for charging and data at the same time, a faster processor and a charcoal finish.

Space you need
Published guidance for a comfortable hitting area is about 10 ft wide × 10 ft deep × 9 ft high (3.0 × 3.0 × 2.7 m). That covers the swing and the unit beside the ball; a projected simulator room also needs space for the screen or enclosure in front. Because the unit sits side-on, it suits shorter garages and spare rooms better than radar units that sit behind the golfer.
Who it may suit, and who should look elsewhere
Worth a look if
You want a permanent indoor setup, all the regular users swing from the same side, and you value a mature course-play ecosystem.
Look elsewhere if
Left- and right-handed golfers share the room, you mainly practise outdoors, or you want the lowest-cost camera option. Compare the Square Golf first on price.
Assessment status
Not yet tested by Golf Gear Lab. No GGL Score is given and it does not appear in our “Best” rankings until the full assessment is complete. Scores for the SkyTrak+ are not transferred.
Before ordering
- Confirm which membership tier you need for the software you plan to use, and its renewal cost after the first year.
- Check your room width allows the unit beside the ball for every golfer who will use it.
- Compare the complete room cost (screen, mat, projector, PC) with a fully assessed alternative such as the Square Golf or Garmin R50.
