Ball Speed Monitor Explained
Ball speed is one of the first numbers any launch monitor shows you, and one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what it measures, how different launch monitors capture it, and what it does and does not tell you about a shot.

What is ball speed in golf? The speed of the ball immediately after it leaves the clubface, usually shown in mph or km/h. It is distinct from clubhead speed, which is measured before impact.
How is ball speed measured? Two main approaches are used. Doppler radar tracks the ball itself as it travels away from the clubface, typically from a position behind the ball. Camera-based systems use very high frame-rate images captured in the first inches of ball flight, typically from beside or above the ball, and calculate speed from that early flight data.
What is smash factor? Ball speed divided by clubhead speed. It is a widely used efficiency figure in golf instruction — a higher smash factor generally means more efficient energy transfer at impact, though the realistic maximum varies by club and by how centred the strike was.
Is a higher ball speed always better? Not on its own. Ball speed only becomes useful alongside launch angle and spin rate, since those two figures determine how that speed actually converts into carry distance and shot shape. A high ball speed with a poor launch angle or excessive spin can still produce a short or wayward shot.
Why ball speed matters more than clubhead speed alone
Clubhead speed is what you generate; ball speed is what you actually transfer to the ball. The relationship between the two — smash factor — is a more useful efficiency indicator than either number in isolation, because it reflects how well-struck the shot was, not just how fast the club was swung. Two golfers with identical clubhead speed can produce very different ball speeds depending on strike quality alone.
How launch monitors actually capture ball speed
The two dominant measurement approaches — radar and camera — have different practical trade-offs that matter more for room setup and use case than for raw ball-speed accuracy on a clean strike. Radar systems generally need a clear tracking path either behind or in front of the ball and can be well suited to both indoor and outdoor use where that space is available. Camera-based systems measure close to the point of impact and generally need less room depth, which is often easier to accommodate in a compact indoor space. What ball speed does not tell you
Ball speed alone cannot explain why a shot flew short, curved offline, or ballooned in the air — those outcomes come from the combination of ball speed, launch angle, spin rate and spin axis together. A launch monitor that only reports ball speed and estimated distance is giving you a fraction of the picture compared with one that also reports these additional figures.
