Spin rate and spin axis, explained

Spin rate is the easier of the two concepts — it is simply how fast the ball is rotating, usually reported in rpm, and it strongly influences how a shot climbs and how much it slows down in flight. Spin axis is less intuitive: it describes the tilt of the spin around the ball's direction of travel. A ball spinning purely backward (a typical straight backspin) flies straight; tilt that spin axis even slightly and the shot starts to curve. Understanding spin axis is what lets a golfer diagnose a slice or a hook rather than just observe that it happened.

Club data: path, face angle and angle of attack

Ball flight is a downstream result of what the club was doing at impact. Club path describes the direction the clubhead was travelling; face angle describes where the clubface was pointing; and the relationship between the two is what determines whether a shot starts left, right or straight, and whether it curves further from there. Angle of attack — whether the club was moving upward or downward through the ball — affects launch angle, spin rate and how efficiently ball speed is generated. These figures are what separate a launch monitor built for swing diagnosis from one built purely for distance tracking.
