Buy the V5 if you want to improve using data. Buy the S44 if you want a better-looking watch that also gives you yardages.
Tracking is the V5’s whole point
The V5 comes with 16 club tags and records every shot automatically. Afterwards, the Shot Scope app shows more than 100 stats, including strokes gained and your real average distance with each club, and Shot Scope charges no subscription. For a golfer trying to lower their handicap, that data is worth more than a nicer screen.
The S44’s screen and everyday use
The S44’s 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen is much brighter and sharper than the V5’s backlit MIP display. Garmin quotes up to 10 days as a smartwatch, so it works as an everyday watch too. You can add shot tracking with Garmin CT1 sensors, sold separately. Some of Garmin’s best on-course features, including CourseView maps, Green Contours and PlaysLike distance, need a Garmin Golf membership.
