Room planning

How much space do you really need for a golf simulator?

Use real room shapes rather than a single minimum dimension. Ceiling height, golfer position, launch-monitor technology and screen clearance all interact.

Quick answer

A comfortable full-swing room is usually easier to plan around roughly 9–10 ft of clear height, enough width to centre the golfer safely, and enough depth for the chosen launch monitor plus screen buffer. Smaller rooms can work, but only after a real swing-clearance test.

Four common UK room examples

Single garage

Often workable when clear height is sufficient and door tracks do not cut into the swing. Camera-based monitors reduce the need for radar depth.

Double garage

Usually gives more freedom to centre the hitting position, accommodate left- and right-handed golfers and retain storage.

Garden room

Can be designed around the simulator from the start. Prioritise internal clear height, ventilation, power and acoustic treatment.

Spare room

Depth may be manageable but ceiling height and safe club clearance are often the limiting factors. Test with the tallest intended golfer and driver.

Dedicated outbuilding

The easiest route to a permanent screen, projector and PC, provided insulation and moisture are handled properly.

Multipurpose room

Retractable screens and movable mats help, but repeatable alignment and safe containment matter more than appearance.

Room fit by launch-monitor type

TechnologySpace implicationTypical planning advantage
Camera-based beside the ballLess depth behind the golferUseful in compact indoor rooms
Radar behind the ballNeeds verified space behind the ball and ball flightPortable and useful indoors/outdoors
Ceiling-mounted cameraRequires permanent overhead installationClear floor and easy handedness switching

Frequently asked questions

Can an 8-foot room work?

Sometimes, but room height cannot be approved from the number alone. Golfer height, swing, club length, mat thickness and overhead obstructions must be checked.

What dimension matters most?

Clear swing height is the first safety gate; after that, width and depth determine hitting position, screen geometry and launch-monitor choice.
