Measure finished height
Measure from the top of the hitting surface to the lowest obstruction — not simply floor to ceiling. Lights, beams, garage-door tracks and projectors can become the limiting point.
Nine feet (2.74 m) is workable for many golfers, but the number alone cannot guarantee safe swing clearance. Golfer height, club length, swing shape, floor build-up and where you stand all matter.
9 ft is a much more realistic starting point than 8 ft, but test the actual swing area before buying. Make slow, controlled swings with the longest club you expect to use, allowing for any mat or raised floor that reduces usable height.

A room that works for one player may not work for a taller golfer or someone with a more upright finish. If several people will use the simulator, test the tallest and most expansive swing.
Ceiling height is only one constraint. Room depth can favour a camera-based monitor over a radar unit, while width matters for centred hitting and left/right-handed use.
