Best golf GPS watch for seniors: easy-to-read picks
Short answer: the Garmin Approach S12 is the easiest golf watch to use, with buttons instead of a touchscreen, a high-contrast screen and up to 30 hours of battery, from about £107. If eyesight is the main concern, a handheld such as the Shot Scope H50, with its 4.3-inch screen, is easier to read than any watch.

What makes a GPS easy to use
Readable screen. High-contrast screens (the S12) stay clear in bright sun; colour AMOLED screens (the S50, H50) are brighter and sharper. A larger screen helps more than a sharper one, which is why a handheld beats a watch for readability.
Buttons or touch. Buttons work with a glove on and wet fingers. Touchscreens show more detail but need a deliberate tap.
Battery. Look for at least two rounds per charge so a forgotten charge does not end the round. The S12 is quoted at up to 30 hours of GPS.
No subscription. None of our picks needs one for distances.
Watch or handheld?
Choose a watch if you carry your bag and want distances at a glance. Choose a handheld if you use a trolley or buggy, or want the largest text. Both the H50 and Phantom 3 have magnets for a trolley frame. See GPS watch or handheld GPS for the full comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest golf GPS watch to use?
The Garmin Approach S12. It is button-operated, shows front, middle and back distances on a 1.3-inch high-contrast screen that is easy to read in sunlight, weighs 34 g and lasts up to 30 hours in GPS mode. Guide price from about £107.
Is a watch or a handheld GPS better for older golfers?
A handheld usually wins on readability. The Shot Scope H50 has a 4.3-inch screen, about three times the width of a watch face, and clips to a trolley with its built-in magnet. A watch is better if you walk with a carry bag and want distances without reaching for anything.
Do any of these need a subscription?
No. The Garmin Approach S12, Bushnell iON Elite, Shot Scope H50 and Bushnell Phantom 3 all give course distances without a subscription. Garmin offers an optional Garmin Golf membership for extra features on some watches.
